Trip to the coral station
Together with Claudia (our Impact Host and coral expert) and a diver, we set off on a small boat. boat, which took us about 15 minutes across the gentle sea to the coral restoration station in Padangbai. station in Padangbai. During the trip, we were already given some interesting facts about corals and stories about how the project came about. There are many different reasons why corals are damaged or destroyed. This project has therefore set itself the task of to replant precisely these damaged corals.
The reefstars
We had two so-called "reef stars" on board for this. These are metal grids covered with a special layer of sand. covered with a special layer of sand. We were then allowed to attach the coral fragments to this construction, that our diver had collected fresh from the seabed. As I had never held live coral in my hands, I was amazed at how moist and slimy the sea plants are. However, this only means good things, as it shows that the corals are still alive. After about 20 minutes we had the corals firmly attached to the Reefstars. In the meantime, they were the corals were repeatedly sprinkled with seawater, as the corals should not remain on the surface for too long. the sea surface for too long. Claudia made one last check to make sure everything was secure and we were able to the Reefstars from the boat to our diver, who mounted them for us on the seabed. assembled them for us.
Attaching the reefstar and snorkeling
Meanwhile, we were able to put on our snorkeling masks and watch the observe the assembly from above. Of course, not only our Reefstars could be seen on the seabed but also a whole host of other constructions full of corals and fish. fish. And lo and behold, back on the boat, we were able to spot a few dolphins about 5 meters away from us: simply magical! I really enjoyed the excursion. The mixture of adventure and interesting facts is ideal. Above all I was particularly pleased to be able to admire the coral reef from above with a snorkel (as a "non-diver"). from above.
