Day 1 – Arrival & Relax | Negombo

Upon landing in Sri Lanka, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your driver, who will accompany you throughout the next two weeks and share insights about the country and its culture. You’ll head to a small, family-run guesthouse in Negombo where you can unwind after your journey. Spend the rest of the day strolling through the coastal town, sampling local cuisine, or simply relaxing on the nearby beach.

Day 2 – Jungle Monastery & Relaxation | Ritigala & Habarana

After breakfast, venture to the mystical Ritigala—a centuries‑old monastery hidden deep in the forest, surrounded by tranquility and nature. Feel the spiritual atmosphere as you meander through moss-covered ruins and hidden paths. Next, head to your charming eco-lodge—its open design connects you directly with nature; you’re quite literally “sleeping in the jungle.” This lodge supports a reforestation project: every tree you see was planted by the project you are now supporting. Day 3 – Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa: Discover Sri Lanka’s History

Today, you ascend the legendary Sigiriya rock fortress—enjoy panoramic views and marvel at its world-famous frescoes. Afterwards, cycle through the expansive ruins of Polonnaruwa, an ancient royal city brimming with temples, stories, and hidden details. In the evening, relax with a cozy dinner at your lodge—under the starry sky, accompanied by the sounds of the jungle.

Day 4 – Sunrise Hike & Kayak | Pidurangala

Start the day with a sunrise hike up Pidurangala Rock for breathtaking views—including a striking perspective of Sigiriya. Afterwards, paddle a kayak across the tranquil Thalkote Wewa lake—watch birds, soak in the serene morning, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The rest of the day is yours: unwind at your lodge or explore on foot — and learn more about the reforestation efforts and the passionate work of your host Maulie.

Day 5 – Temples, Birds & Elephants | Dambulla & Wasgamuwa

On the way to your next destination, visit the impressive Dambulla Cave Temple. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features five caves with hundreds of Buddha statues and stunning ceiling frescoes. In the afternoon, continue to Wasgamuwa National Park—far from the usual tourist trails. There, you’ll take a gentle nature walk through the beautiful surroundings. With a bit of luck, you’ll spot elephants, monkeys, and many native bird species. This area is especially known for its biodiversity and natural richness. Your overnight stay supports a project aimed at mitigating the growing human-wildlife conflict to help protect elephants in the region.

Day 6 – Elephant Conservation & Village Life | Wasgamuwa

Today’s focus is on conservation and community: you’ll dive into the work of the “Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society” and learn about the “Project Orange Elephant,” which seeks to reduce human-elephant conflict through sustainable methods. Visit a local farming family that participates in the project—enjoy a homemade lunch and gain personal insights into their everyday lives. In the afternoon, you’ll visit an elephant corridor. This unique project allows elephants to roam freely between habitats—your stay supports the expansion and protection of this vital area. You’ll actively participate in the project for a day and learn more about the organization’s work and the elephants they strive to protect. You'll sleep at another great nature preservation project.

Day 7 – Safari, Sacred Temple & Cooking Class | Kandy & Digana

Start your day with another early safari in Wasgamuwa National Park—keep your eyes open for elephants, water buffalo, peacocks, and many other animals. Afterwards, head toward the cultural capital of Kandy. There, visit the famous Temple of the Tooth, one of the holiest sites in Buddhism. Continue to the tranquil village of Digana, where you’ll stay in a small family-run eco-lodge, that actively promotes reforestation efforts & supports the local community. In the evening, you’ll participate in a traditional cooking session with a local family. Learn to prepare typical Sri Lankan dishes and enjoy your self-cooked meal.

Day 8 – Mountain Trekking & Tree Planting | Knuckles Range

Today’s trek takes you into the Knuckles Mountain Range—a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a unique ecosystem. With your local guide, hike through cloud forests, tea fields, and past small waterfalls. Along the way, you may stop in small villages to meet locals and learn about their traditional lifestyles. In the afternoon, contribute to reforestation by planting a tree with the lodge team—your personal contribution to the preservation of this unique environment & a great reason to return to this magical place.

Day 9 – Forest Reserve & Scenic Train Ride | Udawatta Kele & Ella

After breakfast, visit the peaceful Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, located just outside Kandy. This protected forest is home to a wide variety of plants, birds, and monkeys. Afterwards, head to the train station—today you’ll ride the iconic train from Bandarawela to Ella. This scenic route is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world: lush hills, tea plantations, and breathtaking views await. In Ella, you’ll stay with a warm-hearted host family, with amazing views & amazing food.

Day 10 – Hike, Nine Arch Bridge & Tea Farm | Ella & Aba Estate

In the morning, hike up Little Adam’s Peak—an easy ascent with rewarding views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Then visit the world-famous Nine Arch Bridge, a masterpiece of colonial engineering nestled in the jungle. In the afternoon, head to the Aba Estate, a sustainably managed tea plantation. There, you’ll learn how tea is grown, harvested, and processed—of course, a tasting is included! This project not only promotes sustainable agriculture and tea production, but also actively supports the local community & region. It is considered one of the pioneers of sustainable tea production in Sri Lanka. Afterward, you’ll return to your host family.

Day 11 – Waterfalls & Remote Safari | Diyaluma & Buttala

An early start takes you to Diyaluma Falls – Sri Lanka’s second-highest waterfall. Once at the top, you can swim in the natural rock pools — an unforgettable experience with breathtaking views. After a hearty lunch with a local family, the journey continues toward Buttala, where you’ll go on a jungle safari far off the typical tourist routes. Here, you’ll encounter wildlife in their natural habitat — an adventure straight out of a storybook.

Day 12 – Kayak Safari & Buddha Rock| Buduruwagala & Ahangama

In the morning, another absolute highlight awaits: a sunrise kayak safari. During this experience, you can watch elephants calmly bathing and wading through the water as you glide past them in your kayak — a truly magical moment. Afterwards, you’ll visit the Buduruwagala rock wall, featuring impressive Buddha statues up to 15 meters tall dating back to the 10th century. Finally, you’ll arrive at the coastal town of Ahangama, where your beach holiday begins! You’ll stay in a small, family-run accommodation just steps from the beach.

Day 13 – Permaculture Farm & Beach Time | Ahangama

In the morning, visit a permaculture farm near Ahangama. The local team will show you how sustainable agriculture and social engagement go hand-in-hand. You’ll learn about regional fruits, traditional farming methods, and eat a delicious meal prepared from the harvest. The rest of the day is free for you to relax on the beach or explore the coast. Ahangama is known for its relaxed surf vibes and scenic palm beaches.

Day 14 – Mangroves reforestation & Galle Fort | Departure or Extension

Before heading to the airport, visit the Negenahiru Foundation, which is committed to protecting mangrove forests. Join a boat trip across Madampa Lake, plant your own mangrove seedling, and observe the rich birdlife and flora. You'll directly support this amazing organization & learn more about the important role mangroves play in preserving our climate & coastal areas. On the way to the airport, stop in the historic old town of Galle. Take a stroll through its colonial streets, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy the view of the Indian Ocean from the fortress walls. If your flight is the next day, an additional night in Negombo can be arranged.

Each journey includes stays in three family-run homestays, directly supporting household income while fostering education and sustainable livelihoods. You’ll also take part in three local reforestation initiatives, such as the Forest Healing Foundation or the Galkadawala Lodge Forest Project, and help plant mangroves – a powerful way to reduce CO₂ emissions and protect fragile coastal ecosystems from erosion and the effects of climate change.

How much physical fitness do I need for this trip?

This trip is generally suitable for anyone with a normal level of fitness. It includes light hikes, such as to Pidurangala Rock or through the Knuckles Mountains, as well as relaxed kayaking tours. All activities are optional — you decide how active you want to be. Good footwear, curiosity, and a bit of adventure spirit are all you need!

Throughout your entire trip, you’ll be accompanied by a professional English-speaking guide – with a German-speaking option available upon request.
