SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL: TRANSPORT OPTIONS AT A GLANCE
What options do I have for transport and what alternatives are there now?
Holidays and travel are a highlight for many, but they also have an ecological footprint. In particular, the way we get to our holiday destinations has a significant impact on the environment. According to studies by the Federal Environment Agency from 2022, flying is by far the biggest climate polluter. To illustrate this: A flight from Germany to the Maldives causes as much CO2 per person as a 15,000 km car journey in a medium-sized car.
The cycling revolution: exploring local destinations and protecting the environment
When it comes to shorter distances, the bicycle and the e-bike are at the top of the list. Not only because they are absolutely emission-free, but also because they benefit our health. However, we are aware that longer journeys, e.g. to Spain, are a challenge by bike. But there are inspiring solutions for this too, for example in the form of bicycle tours combined with hikes or canoe excursions.
Train and long-distance bus: Climate-friendly alternatives for long distances
Trains are not only comfortable, but also environmentally friendly. With modern high-speed trains and CO2 emissions of 32 g per passenger kilometre, they offer a green alternative to flying. Night trains also make it possible to cover long distances overnight, saving travel time. On the other hand, long-distance buses, with only 29 g CO2 per passenger-kilometre, are climate-friendly and often cheaper than other means of transport. Thanks to amenities such as Wi-Fi, the journey becomes not only affordable but also comfortable.
Urban lifestyle: cargo bikes and carpooling
In densely built-up urban areas, cargo bikes prove to be true everyday heroes. With their large loading area, they are perfect for transporting large purchases, safely carrying children or transporting small pieces of furniture. In the process, they not only protect the environment by dispensing with fossil fuels, but also make it easier to find a parking space and promote physical activity. For longer distances that exceed city limits, BlaBlaCar offers an ideal solution as a ride-sharing platform. Here, travellers can share their journeys, reduce costs and minimise CO2 emissions at the same time. The principle of travelling together also promotes social interaction and connects people in a very special way.
On the move sustainably on site
Now we have successfully arrived at our holiday destination as sustainably as possible, but how we get around the holiday destination plays an equally important role. Cities and regions are investing more and more in their public transport network. Buses, trains and trams offer a convenient way to explore the area, reducing congestion and air pollution. In addition, bicycle rentals offer an efficient way to explore a city on two wheels. Other alternatives in urban areas are e-scooters or segways, which have gained presence in almost all major European cities in recent years. They are perfect for short distances, consume little energy and are a fun way to get around.
