Visiting la Fundación ATASIM in Macas has been one of the highlights on our trip to Ecuador! That it not just because of the very rich and fascinating nature the mountainous "selva" (Rainforest) and the Sangay National Park have to offer, but because you can experience sustainable agriculture, an NGO's work with the local comunities and nature all in once. Everyone working at the Fundación is very helpful and if you are interested in cultivation and production of both environmentally and socially sustainable coffee, production of beautiful and detailed ceramics with the local community or about other projects the NGO supports, they will explain it passionately and show you the grounds in San Isidro, right at the bottom of the volcano Sangay. There is a lot to do in that region of Ecuador. We didn`t look up a lot in advance but I doubt that we would have found a lot since its not very touristy (yet) - lucky us, because there is so much to do! From boat tours to the selva and the indigenous Shuar- and Ashuar-people, hiking in the Sangay National Park (definitely recommended!) to strolling throug the small, but vivid city with many cafés, restaurants and a beautiful church. At night you can even hear the volcano rumour, if close enough. We also bought some of their coffee to take home, or you take one of the unique hand-made mugs or plates, made from natural resources only. There is a gallery behind the accomodation in Macas, where you can admire the ceramical art work as well as learn about the artists, which are from local communities as well as the indigenous people living in the rainforest and the mountains. I would definitely come back!
